Loneliness in older people

Growing old presents many challenges that we might not consider during our younger years, loneliness in older people is one of them and it can have a serious impact on quality of life affecting both physical and mental health.

Recent figures published by the Campaign To End Loneliness reveals that there are 9 million people affected by loneliness in the UK and 4 million of these are older people. During the winter months, the number of people affected by chronic loneliness becomes even greater.

Evidence suggests that the effects of loneliness can be devastating, leading to an increase in mortality by 26% as well as a higher risk of developing coronary heart disease, depression and cognitive decline including dementia.

Loneliness can often creep up on people in later life caused by bereavement, ill-health and poor mobility as the opportunities to access the local community are reduced causing increased social isolation. Coronavirus has of course had an even bigger impact on this growing issue making it much harder to ease the problem of loneliness in older people.

I felt completely confident and happy leaving mum in her care. The house now looks clean and cosy and mum looks wonderfully well looked after.”
